As the world works toward climate neutrality, reducing CO₂ emissions remains one of the greatest challenges—particularly for energy-intensive industries like cement, steel, and chemicals. Even with increased adoption of renewables and improvements in energy efficiency, a significant portion of emissions is considered unavoidable. This is where carbon capture and storage (CCS) comes in, offering a critical path forward in the race to net-zero.
Among the available CCS technologies, membrane-based CO₂ separation is gaining traction due to its intrinsic advantages:
- Lower energy consumption compared to traditional separation methods
- Compact and modular design, ideal for retrofitting or distributed applications
- Potential for cost-effective scale-up and integration into existing processes
However, realizing the full potential of membranes in large-scale CO₂ capture still requires significant R&D efforts. Performance limitations, material stability under harsh conditions, and manufacturing scalability remain key challenges.
At EMI Twente BV, we are actively contributing to overcoming these barriers. Our contract research services support both academic and industrial partners in developing the next generation of CO₂ separation membranes. Our activities include:
- Tailored design and synthesis of new membrane materials
- Development and optimization of high-performance membranes, including hollow fibers, thin film composites, and mixed matrix membranes
- Performance benchmarking of commercial membranes under realistic flue gas conditions
- Guidance and support for scale-up and pilot testing
With over 30 years of experience in membrane research and process development, we combine practical engineering expertise with deep materials knowledge. Our strength lies not only in lab-scale innovation, but also in translating these innovations toward real-world application—ensuring scalability, robustness, and future usability.
Whether you’re seeking to test a new material, optimize an existing process, or explore alternative separation concepts, EMI Twente is your independent and flexible development partner.
Let’s collaborate to make membrane-based CO₂ capture a practical and powerful solution for a low-carbon future.
