EMI Twente offers a comprehensive range of analytical services to support membrane development, process optimization, and material characterization. From assessing membrane performance metrics like permeability and selectivity to advanced techniques such as chemical composition analysis and surface characterization, we provide accurate, reliable data to inform your decisions. Whether you need failure analysis, fouling investigation, or detailed material profiling, our experienced team delivers insights that go beyond the numbers. With a focus on precision and practicality, we ensure you have the information you need to drive progress and solve challenges effectively.

Why perform a membrane autopsy?
Scaling and fouling are the biggest challenges in membrane operations, significantly impacting membrane performance. Typically, fouling leads to lower permeance and/or higher operational pressure, which in turn reduces process efficiency and can result in a loss of production capacity. Furthermore, improper operation can cause mechanical damage to membranes, leading to lower retention rates. By identifying the root causes of these issues, we can help you achieve higher uptime, reduce cleaning frequency, and ensure more consistent operation.
Our autopsy process follows a meticulous protocol. We carefully open the element, sampling multiple locations to ensure a thorough investigation. Using advanced techniques such as Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) with elemental analysis and clean water flux measurements, we build a detailed picture of the element’s condition. From there, we deploy a range of specialized methods—FTIR, XPS, staining tests, and more—to delve deeper into any anomalies. We produce a comprehensive report that not only reveals the cause of failure but also empowers the customer to refine their processes and prevent future issues.
At EMI Twente, we don’t just solve problems; we help our partners push boundaries and optimize their operations. Whether it’s investigating membrane failures or innovating new solutions, we’re here to ensure you stay ahead of the curve.
