Literature studies

Explore membrane technology before you invest

Are you considering membrane technology for a new separation, material, product or process? A focused literature study can give you the technical overview you need before moving into experiments, pilot trials or larger investments. At EMI Twente, we help companies translate scientific knowledge into practical direction. We review the current state of membrane technology, assess the relevance of available materials and processes, and identify the key opportunities and risks for your specific application. Whether you work with polymers, produce membranes, or use membranes in an industrial process, we provide clear insight that helps you decide on the next step with confidence.

Turn published knowledge into practical direction

A large amount of membrane research is published every year, but not every academic result is directly relevant for industrial use. Performance data may be reported under ideal laboratory conditions, materials may be difficult to process, and promising concepts may still face challenges in stability, fouling, cleaning or scale up. Our literature studies help you separate scientific potential from practical reality. We combine deep membrane expertise with an industrial perspective. This allows us to interpret academic publications, technical reports and available market information in the context of your feed stream, target separation, operating conditions and development goals. AI tools can be useful for collecting and summarising information, but membrane technology requires expert interpretation. Reported performance is often strongly influenced by membrane preparation, module design, feed composition and operating conditions. EMI Twente adds the practical knowledge needed to judge whether published results are relevant for your application. The result is a structured assessment of what could work, what still needs to be proven, and which route is most relevant to explore further.

When is a literature study useful?

A literature study is especially valuable in the early stages of development, when the right technical direction is not yet fully clear. It can help you explore a new market, compare membrane technology with existing alternatives, support an internal investment decision, or strengthen the technical basis of a grant proposal. It can also prevent unnecessary experiments. By identifying the most relevant membrane materials, process concepts and technical risks upfront, a literature study helps you focus lab work on the questions that matter most. Because EMI Twente also has experience with membrane development, membrane screening, lab testing and pilot scale validation, the recommendations are not limited to desk research. Where relevant, we translate literature findings into practical experimental routes to validate the most important assumptions.

Typical questions we help answer include:

  • Could membrane technology be suitable for this separation?
  • Which membrane materials or membrane types are most relevant?
  • What performance levels have been reported in literature?
What are the main risks for industrial use, such as fouling, chemical stability, ageing, compaction or cleaning?
  • What would be a logical next step: further desk research, lab testing, membrane screening, process development or pilot scale validation?

Clear outcomes and recommendations

The outcome of a literature study is discussed in a presentation, where we explain the findings, assumptions and recommended next steps. Depending on your needs, the study can also include specific deliverables such as a membrane candidate list, a risk overview, a technology comparison or a proposed experimental plan. Our goal is to provide insight that is directly useful for decision making. After the study, you should have a clearer understanding of the technical potential, the main uncertainties and the most efficient route towards validation. In many cases, a literature study is the first step towards further development. When testing is required, EMI Twente can support follow up activities such as membrane screening, lab scale experiments, process development and pilot scale trials.
