EMI Twente BV has conducted a membrane pilot test for the powerful Biophree technology. Currently being tested by Royal HaskoningDHV, Aquacare Europe B.V., and STOWA at the Dronten Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Waterschap Zuiderzeeland, the Netherlands, this technology is pushing the limits of what’s possible.
This research project tackles the challenge of advanced phosphate removal, driving effluent levels down to an unprecedented 0.1 mg P/l. At the core of the Biophree technology, phosphate is captured by Fe-granules, which require regeneration under alkaline conditions once saturated.
But here’s where the real innovation happens: By harnessing the power of an NF-membrane, resistant to high pH, we recover a significant portion of the caustic, making this process not just possible, but economically viable. This pilot test is a major leap forward in the evolution of the Biophree technology, and we’re just getting started.
