At EMI Twente, we’re driven by a singular purpose: to push the boundaries of filtration technology and create solutions that solve real-world challenges. In partnership with Sartorius, a global leader in filtration technologies, we are working at the cutting edge hollow fiber membrane development for revolutionize biopharmaceutical industry — from biopharmaceutical filtration to beverage and virus filtration.
The Sartorius portfolio encompasses a comprehensive range of filtration products designed to support both upstream and downstream processes within the biopharmaceutical industry. This includes flat sheet membranes for various biopharmaceutical filtration applications, as well as hollow fiber membranes tailored for beverage and virus filtration. The company’s established product development division for hollow fiber membrane technologies has introduced tangential flow filtration (TFF) using hollow fiber membranes, offering key advantages such as high surface-to-volume ratios and gentle filtration, ideal for shear-sensitive biomolecules. These robust and reliable TFF membranes, crafted from modified poly(ether sulfone) (m-PES), are engineered to meet diverse biopharmaceutical requirements.
The portfolio offers a broad spectrum of molecular weight cut-offs within the ultrafiltration (UF) range, spanning from 3 to 750 kDa, in addition to microfiltration (MF) membranes with pore sizes from 0.1 to 0.65 µm. This extensive range enables the effective integration of hollow fiber membranes into TFF applications for downstream and upstream processes, including perfusion, diafiltration, concentration, clarification, and cell harvesting.
To continually enhance our product offerings, Sartorius actively expands its expertise through ongoing research and collaborations with leading partners in the membrane technology sector. Our collaborations cover industrial partnerships with companies for spinning line construction, the research organization EMI Twente, as well as academic collaboration including the Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials (DWI), the Rheinisch-Westphälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen and the University Duisburg-Essen.
EMI Twente is our partner for exchange and knowledge transfer in the field of hollow fiber membrane processing. Together we demonstrate the reproducibility of membrane performance across different spinning devices.

Role of EMI Twente
Through our partnership with Sartorius, we developed robust and reliable hollow fiber membranes. Investigating a wide range of parameters during our spinning processes and testing reproducibility, we created a wide range of membranes designed for diverse (biopharmaceutical) applications. These membranes have molecular weight cut-offs in ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF).
